In the final chapters, the reader finds out what was going on. Jay gets a mysterious phone call and then Military Intelligence arrive, arrest him and free Harry. He follows Jay back to London, but when they arrive at Jay’s flat his associates capture him and take him to talk to Jay. Harry goes to Dalby’s house and discovers Dalby there with Jay and the ‘Hungarian’ jailers. He recovers at a friend’s flat, but Harry’s tormentors kill his friend and frame Harry for the murder. He manages to get out and discovers that his prison is not actually in Hungary but is in fact in London. Harry realises he has to escape before the brainwashing succeeds. The Hungarians hold Harry and start trying to brainwash him… Brainwashed There, Harry discovers that the Americans have the same problem with their scientists disappearing, and that they suspect he is a Soviet agent.Ī few days later, Dalby tells Harry that the Americans have found a body on the coast road, and they go to investigate. Dalby disappears and the Americans arrest Harry, suspecting him of killing a guard and sending information about their nuclear test to a Soviet submarine offshore. The Americans interrogate Harry and then swap him with the Hungarians for two crashed spy-plane pilots. In the abandoned safe house, they discover a tape with what sound like distorted human voices on it.ĭalby takes Harry to observe an American nuclear weapons test in the Pacific. However, the arrest does lead Harry to a safe house, which he raids with the help of the police. They kill the operatives who were tailing them, who turn out to be from US Navy Intelligence.īack in London, the police pick up one of Jay’s gang, but someone kills him before Harry can interrogate him. Dalby and Harry set up an ambush and rescue the scientist. Dalby learns Jay is going to smuggle the missing scientist over the border into Syria in the boot of a car. Harry travels to Beirut, followed by what he assumes are Jay’s operatives. Harry meets Jay and goes with him to a seedy nightclub, where he finds the missing scientist, but a police raid interrupts him. He suspects a man codenamed Jay is involved and sends Harry to offer money for the scientist’s return. He tells Harry that another British scientist has disappeared, the latest of eight top-echelon personnel who have vanished in the last six weeks. The head of Provisional, Dalby, welcomes Harry to his team. An unnamed British agent (I will refer to him as ‘Harry’, the only name he gives in the novel, though he says it is false) leaves Military Intelligence and joins a small civilian intelligence agency named WOOC(P), known as ‘Provisional’. ![]() To view them, just select/highlight them.
